The Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Since my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and ask for a job. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
