No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
