Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
