Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Police then found many other marked cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him speechless and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
